The are various ways in which a South African may lose citizenship status. Depending on how the citizenship status was acquired in the first instance, the Act determines the status of these persons after the loss of the South African citizenship status.
- Depending on when and how a South African ceased to be a South African citizen, the person may apply for either a resumption of the former citizenship status or an exemption from the loss of the former citizenship status.
